What is Sign Language Interpreting?

American Sign Language/English Interpreters are trained professionals who provide a communication link between people who use spoken English and d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals who use American Sign Language. Interpreters abide by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.

Where is an Interpreter Needed?

SDHHS provides ASL/English interpreting services in a variety of settings to facilitate communication. These settings may include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Court
  • Counseling
  • Doctors appointments
  • Job interviews
  • Staff meetings
  • Workshops/Training
  • Performances
  • Lawyers appointments
  • Youth groups
  • Weddings
  • Funerals

Why Should I Hire a Sign Language Interpreter?

  • Professional Interpreters are used to ensure clear communication between English speaking and signing d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals.
  • Both parties need the services of the Interpreter.
  • When communicating with people who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind or Hard of Hearing communication must be accessible and meaningful.
  • Professional conduct, neutrality and confidentiality by the Interpreter help to create a positive environment for communication.

Booking an Interpreter

Two weeks notice is ideal if you require an Interpreter on a specific date and time. We will do our best to accommodate with less notice. Interpreting assignments longer than 1.5 hours will be assessed to determine how many Interpreters are required in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards. To book interpreting services please provide the following information:

 

  • Date
  • Time and duration
  • Location address
  • Nature of the assignment
  • Full name(s) and contact information for confirmation
  • Full billing address, if applicable

What is the Fee?

ASL

The rate is $60.00/hr per Interpreter (8:00am-4:00pm) with a 1.5 hour minimum charge. After regular business hours, on weekends and holidays, the fee is $70.00/hr per Interpreter with a 2 hour minimum charge. Mileage is .42/km and travel time is compensated the same as our hourly rates. Please keep in mind, SDHHS has a 24 hour notice of cancellation policy.

 

SDHHS receives a subsidy from the Government of Saskatchewan which keep costs down. Pending availability of granted funds, there may be free interpreting services for Sport, Culture, and Recreational activities within the cities of Regina and Saskatoon. This is made possible through the cities Community Grant Programs which are funded by Saskatchewan Lotteries.

What is After-Hours Emergency Interpreting?

When an interpreter is required for a legal or medical emergency before or after SDHHS business hours, an interpreter can be contacted via:

Emergency Interpreting is limited to:
• Being questioned, arrested, or charged by the police
• 911 calls
• Emergency health issues at the hospital Emergency Department
