What is Sign Language Interpreting?

American Sign Language/English Interpreters are trained professionals who provide a communication link between people who use spoken English and d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals who use American Sign Language. Interpreters abide by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.

Where is an Interpreter Needed?

SDHHS provides ASL/English interpreting services in a variety of settings to facilitate communication. These settings may include, but are not limited to:

  • Court
  • Counseling
  • Doctors appointments
  • Job interviews
  • Staff meetings
  • Workshops/Training
  • Performances
  • Lawyers appointments
  • Youth groups

Why Should I Hire a Sign Language Interpreter?

  • Professional Interpreters are used to ensure clear communication between English speaking and signing d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals.
  • Both parties need the services of the Interpreter.
  • When communicating with people who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind or Hard of Hearing communication must be accessible and meaningful.
  • Professional conduct, neutrality and confidentiality by the Interpreter help to create a positive environment for communication.
